KOE - A Fat Tuesday Tradition

The KOE is a non-profit club that parades throughout the French Quarter on Mardi
Gras morning (Fat Tuesday). The KOE members are comprised of people from all
over the world. This is possible due to the fact that we are "Cyber-based". Most of
our members find us via the internet and the rest by word of mouth. All of the
members have one common goal in mind: to spread Mardi Gras cheer on Fat
Tuesday.
The KOE Officers and its members work hard all year to make the next "parade"
the best ever. When the KOE finally converge on the "Big Easy" the true
excitement begins! The members start to arrive anywhere from a week before Fat
Tuesday (some even earlier) up to the weekend before with the anticipation of
what's to come.
The KOE currently has two sanctioned events; a Lundi Gras party in the French
Quarter, and the KOE marching parade on Fat Tuesday. However, many members
of the KOE have become good friends and like to hang out together at different
parades and functions during carnival week.
The KOE Lundi Gras party is always held on the Monday (Lundi) before Fat
Tuesday. For the first time in 2008 the party was a private affair for members and
their guests only. The party starts at 1 p.m. and goes until around 3 p.m. (or until
people feel like wandering off to other fun stuff). The party is the time to meet the
new members and to catch up with friends, as well as to discuss the next day's
parade.
In 2005 the KOE "adopted" Papa Joe's Tropical Isle at 600 Bourbon Street as its
"official" party location. The owners of Papa Joe's Tropical Isle have always
treated the KOE as one of their family. If you want to run into someone from the
KOE stop by Papa Joe's Tropical Isle and you'll be sure to see someone you know.
At Papa Joe's Tropical Isle dancing and revelry always breaks out!
Fat Tuesday is the day that all have been waiting to arrive. Those in the KOE will
soon see the fruition of a year worth of planning and anticipation unfold! The KOE
begins the day at 10:15 a.m. in front of the Saint Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square
dressed in costume. Just prior to heading off for the march through the French
Quarter the paraders, now at 140 plus members strong, group together for the
annual KOE picture.
In 2003 the KOE had its first professionally designed medallion as a throw (the
Krewe of Elvis medallion). It proved to be such a hit that the KOE now has a
special medallion made for each year's theme. Prior to 2003 and still to this day
you will find that many of the members carry "throw items" other than the
medallion; such as beads, candy, scarves, leis, stickers, wooden doubloons, cups,
trinkets -- you name it, the KOE throws it and they're cherished by all that receive
them.
